  1. Taiwan is a major manufacturer of laptops but guess what? It's the last place to get a good price when you want to buy one. Many Taiwanese fly to the States or Japan to buy one for that reason. Taiwan builds laptops for many major computer companies. The new Asustek Eepc is probably going to be one of the hottest laptops to hit the market because of its low price. Asus laptops are an excellent choice.
  2. if you have contacts with people outside of taiwan i would ask them to get you the laptop. sony is okay japanese brands usually hold up well. i have a mac and love it. but price wise it would be much cheaper if you bought it outside of taiwan. as far as getting it repaired i think that you can as long as you send it back to the manufacturer.
  3. Just a heads up, although Sony is a Japanese company, pretty much all of its computers are manufactured in China. We all know China has had some issues lately. I personally dislike Sony, so this is a little biased, of course. Taiwan is one of the biggest producers of laptops, so you don't really have to worry about quality. They're all really good - Acer and Asus in particular. Asus and Acer have branches in the US if you happen to need repair help. I don't know a lot about the prices there though. I'd just set a budget and convert that to Taiwanese dollars (US$ 1 = NT$33). If you happen to be in Taipei, I recommend going to Zhongxiao Xinsheng (you can get there by subway), because it's basically a huge street crammed with computer stores.
  4. Taiwanese computers are good quality and the prices are about the same as you would find anywhere else in the world. You may be able to do some bargaining if you go to tech shops that can assemble all the hardware together for you on site, such as "Nova". Sony is an OK brand name. It will definitely give you an international warrenty. Acer is ok, the warrenty is valid internationally. Asus I think may be better quality, but I am not sure about the international warrenty coverage or not. I highly suggest escaping the enslavement of windows operating systems and get yourself an apple computer if you want superior quality that is reliable and can still run all windows software, with the added bonus that you dont need to get on board the endless cycle of virus-ware updates and payments to scum who take your money and create more methods to assault your computer to ensure you continue to pay them. Thats why windows is evil. Its inferior quality system ware. Using windows is like putting your money into a glass box with a hammer next to it in public.
  5. Asus and Acer are the leading Taiwanese manufacturers of very high quality of laptops and other computer accessories. They all have their issues, you will always find people who prefer other brands and will talk you of of buying one of these. It's because they have had good experience with other brands and would like to see you buying one just like them. The truth is: all other brands have some issues with their laptops! I personally have Toshiba, but my brother and othen very close friends own Asus and Acer laptops in abundance. I personally don't ;ike Sony's, but that mostly because of the rumors about them and lack of experience with them. Taiwanese laptops usually have global warranty, you have to ask your dealer for that though. Many models you can find in Taiwan you will not find anywhere else, the same with their US and European models elsewhere. There are computer streets in every major Taiwan city. In Taichung there is one around the train station (best deals and you can bargain A LOT, just show them you know what you want) and then around NOVA.
  6. Acer and Asus are great brands, do not be afraid to grab one.
